Blood on Anthony statue

by Eugenia Salza Prina Ricotti

Also the defeat and Anthony’s death were preceded by spectacular prodigies. Thus just before the battle of Atium unequivocal signs cleared that things would be adverse to him: Tempests; eruptions; winds of an incredible strength and even a big two headed serpent that (according to Dio) was 28 meters long and who, just before being killed and destroyed by a very timely lightning, did thoroughly devastate and massacred Etruria. But the more deadly omen was seen near Rome on the Alban Hills where , just as sometime modern effigies of the Madonna do, one of Anthony’s marble statue began to drip blood and - always according to Dio - however much was done to stop it, the flux never ceased.
