La fondazione di Alessandria

Che dalla sua nascita a Pella alla sua morte in ancora giovane età nei giardini di Babilonia Alessandro Magno abbia vissuto una vita incantata nessuno lo può negare e avvolta di magia è la leggenda sulla fondazione di Alessandria, la sua città. Si tratta però di un racconto fantastico, molto più recente, una favola diciamo che si trova nel libro dello storico arabo Mas’udi. Egli, riportando una leggenda che, secondo lui, risaliva all'epoca di Alessandro, raccontava come, avendo il giovanissimo re dato ordine di fondare la città di Alessandria, non riusciva mai a farla edificare. Infatti tutto quello che di giorno veniva tirato su, lo si trovava distrutto il giorno dopo. Si sapeva che questo era opera di schiere di animali particolarmente selvaggi che, usciti dal mare durante la notte, demolivano tutto quello che trovavano. Vennero messe sentinelle a sorvegliare i lavori, ma tutto fu inutile. Allora Alessandro escogitò un sistema per vedere di che si trattava . Fece costruire una sorta di scatolone di m 4,50 x 2,25 con le pareti fatte di lastre di vetro inserite nell'impalcatura e impermeabilizzate con pece e resina in modo da rendere stagna la struttura. Poi fattala trascinare al largo da alcuni battelli e, dopo averla fatta ben assicurare con corde, si introdusse in essa con due suoi compagni e si fece calare nel mare. Quando la struttura toccò il fondo, Alessandro ed i suoi compagni, poterono vedere vari mostri marini che passavano nuotando lì attorno. Essi avevano corpi di uomini ma teste di animali ed ognuno di essi portava un attrezzo di quelli normalmente usati dagli operai: picconi, martelli, asce e seghe. Mentre se li vedevano passare davanti, Alessandro ed i suoi due compagni li disegnarono attentamente riportando oltre alle loro forme anche le loro misure. Poi segnalarono ai battelli di ritirarli su. Tornati a riva Alessandro chiamati a sé abili scultori diede loro ordine affinché, basandosi sui loro disegni, foggiassero simulacri del tutto simili a i mostri e li ponessero su una fila di piedistalli che correvano lungo tutta la costa. Fatto ciò gli Alessandrini continuarono a costruire la loro città. Quando cadde la notte i mostri arrivarono fino alla riva, ma vedendo le loro immagini sui piedistalli, si ritirarono spaventati e non ritornarono più fino a che Alessandria non fu finita.
Sembrava che ormai si potesse stare tranquilli, invece proprio allora, appena calò la sera, i mostri riapparvero e così fecero notte dopo notte e ogni giorno si trovava che parecchi cittadini erano scomparsi, ma anche questa volta Alessandro riuscì a sconfiggerli. Egli pose attorno alla città piedistalli di ottone fatti a forma di freccia ed alti 35 metri. Secondo Ma’sudi essi erano ancora lì ai suoi giorni. Alle base di questi vi erano figure rappresentanti certi speciali esseri e su di essi vi erano scritte magiche. Una volta che questi simulacri vennero posti secondo le migliori tradizioni magiche, e cioè dopo aver eseguito accurati studi e complicati calcoli astronomici per stabilire il momento migliore a formare la magica cintura che avrebbe difeso la città, i mostri non tornarono più e Alessandria divenne quel faro di civiltà che la storia ci ha tramandato.

It was magical, and magic is the legend about Alexandria’s foundation. However the tale is completely fantastic and it belongs to a more recent date, a fable, we can say that is found in the book of the Arab historian Ma’sudi who told us a legend that – so he assured - dated back to Alexander times. It was about the fact that, having the very young king ordered to found Alexandria, for a long time he didn’t saw his wish fullfilled. As a matter of fact all walls that had been erected one day were found destroyed the day after. It was known that was the deed of bands of wild animals that every night surfaced from the sea and demolished everything.
Guards were set all around to watch the area, but everything seemed to be of no use. Then to find what happened Alexander devised a plan. He ordered to make a kind of big box measuring 4.50 x 2.25 m with its inner surfaces made of glass panels fixed to a scaffolding and all the structure had to be made waterproof with pitch and resin. Then he ordered it to be towed to the high seas. Here, after that this glass cage had been well tied to long ropes, Alexander and his companions entered in it and were lowered in the water until the structure didn’t hit the bottom. Then Alexander and his companions were able to see many sea monsters swimming around them. They had human bodies but animals’ head and each one of them grasped the kind of tools that workmen use; pickaxes, hammers, axes and saws. While they were seeing them passing before their glass box, Alexander and his companions drew them very carefully and not only copied their shape but they put down also their dimensions: Then they asked the boats to haul them up.
Once ashore Alexander called all the best sculptors and ordered them to very accurately mold images of the monsters they saw represented in their drawing. The statues had to be absolutely like them and they had to be put all along the coast. When this was done the Alexandrian went on building their city. When the night came the monsters arrived to the shore, but seeing their portraits set on the pedestals, they were afraid and withdrew. Thus Alexandria was built an finished and until this moment the monsters never went back.
It really looked as if there was nothing more to worry, instead the trouble began anew. When the night fell just after the town’s inauguration the monsters came back and from this moment they always turned up. Moreover each day people noticed that many of their fellows citizens had disappeared. However also this time Alexander succeeded in solving the problem. He put all around the town brass pedestals shaped in the form of arrows and 35 feet high: Ma’sudi assured that at his times they were still there. On their bases there were statues representing some very special beings and magic formulae were written over them. After that these images were placed following all the magic rules, to wit after having solved accurate studies and complex astronomical calculations to establish which could be the better moment to locate them and to form the magic belt that would protect the town. the monsters never came again. Alexandria flourished and became this headlight of civilization that history has handed down to us.
